My Slovenia vs. England predictions, World Cup 2010
A view from Slovenia

If you've read FIFA's predictions for Group C before the World Cup, you would not believe, that in the last game between Slovenia and England, Slovenia would be considered the favorite as the leader of the group and the team, that has performed the best among all four in the first two games. But what happened this year at the World Cup to England is typical: Big teams disappointed, from France, Italy, Germany to Spain and Portugal, all these teams have struggled in their first games with supposedly small irrelevant teams. Some have even lost. So the chances for Slovenia, the football dwarf from middle Europe, stand good. But do they really?
Here is the table of Group C after two matches played. Slovenia first with a win and a draw, USA and England second and currently last is Algeria. The best chances to advance (when it comes to math), has Slovenia. This is what needs to happen, if my country Slovenia wants to advance to the Round of 16:- We tie with England, we move on, Algeria is out, either USA or England move on.
- We lose against England, but USA and Algeria tie. England and Slovenia move on.
When it comes to England, they only have one option: They must win! They are already in the knock out phase. And that's what makes them dangerous.

Before the World Cup, England was considered as one of the favorites, not only to be first in Group C, but to go all the way up and become champions of the world. Two disappointing matches later and they're fighting to survive. But isn't a lion the most dangerous when he's down? I think, that it will be extremely hard for Slovenia not to lose against England. I have no idea, what kind of tactics will our coach Kek use against the English team, but whatever he'll do, it will be extremely hard to defend the wounded and highly motivated English players. I think just defending over 90min is not a good idea. Slovenia need to play, they need to attack, because that's the best defense. They need need to shoot from afar, because the English keeper is always a weak point. But they also need to play smart, like they did against USA in the first half. I'm sure English are stronger, more physical. Who knows what Rooney will do, if he's mad. I think it may become a bigger battle than Slovenia vs. USA. Can our boys be strong enough to fight the English over 90min? I have my doubts, especially for the 2nd half. However, I am hopeful. The pressure on the Slovenian team is by far not as big as on the English, we have no issues within the team, there are no rifts, everyone supports each other and the whole country stands behind them. When it comes to England, that's a different story. English may be motivated, but they may want too much and try to hard to win without thinking straight.
So here's my prediction: Slovenia vs. England: 1-1
I think Slovenia may score the first goal in the first half and England will eventually tie in the second half. Then there will be chances on both sides, but our keeper Handanović will have a great day and save a lot of great shots.
When it comes to Algeria vs. USA, I think it will be 0-0, because USA only play well for one half and Algeria has a very strong defense and they're hard to play. It will be a tough game as well.
Of course I'd love to see Slovenia win, even if it's 1-0. It would be a historic win and an amazing achievement. Even if they only tie with England, it would be equally great, because we move on to the round of 16 as well. But there's a possibility, that a worst case scenario happens and both England and USA win and the chances for that are not that bad. It's something I really dread and strongly hope that it won't happen. Algeria, we need your help in this. I really hope you play well and at least tie with USA. I know you can do it.
We'll see what happens on Wednesday. Anything can happen basically and I would not dare to say which team will definitely advance to the round of 16. Any of the team has a real chance, if only they play well and give us a great match, everyone will respect the outcome, whatever it may be.

I've been worrying about the above, too. Sometimes I think: We may win, why not? But then I remember the part about the wounded English lion and my optimism sags...
Don't even know wehther I am able to watch it.

@alcessa: Even though we're the best team in the group currently and England disappointed, I'll try to see them as favorites, I try to lower the expectations. Anything can happen, even if we lose, we may qualify... but it'll definitely be nerve-racking for 90min. I need to watch, but I guess I should prepare some sedatives or liquor, hehe...

I have a feeling that US won't win their match (sorry US fans :p). So Slovenia will be through regardless of the result with England.
June 22, 2010 3:58 PM
@YeinJee: I think if Algeria wins and we lose, it may be very tight. Depends on how high we lose and how high they win, but either way, it would be very tight and I fear not enough for Slovenia to move on. We need to tie with England at least.

slovenia should win so that it's gonna be in their face, like: TAKE TAHT.
June 22, 2010 5:44 PM
@Ejann: Haha.. we'll see! Hope so!!! :D

It's been a great World Cup, hasn't it? Lots of surprises. The meltdown for the French team after their mediocre performances made me laugh. They've gone crazy. xP
PS; yes, everything's A-OK on my end for the moment.. just a little broke!
June 22, 2010 7:46 PM
@Kelvin: I hope it will be Slovenia, haha. That would probably mean the end of the world, bigger countries would invade us, hehe :P
@Nashe:Oh boy, the French have a real drama, they're falling apart. I'm glad our guys are having fun and everyone's happy and cool :) Hope you get un-broke soon ;)
June 22, 2010 7:59 PM
Go! Slovenia, Go!
June 22, 2010 9:26 PM
based on stats... the team who must win in the last group match to qualify will always... lose... good signs for slovenia.
June 22, 2010 9:37 PM
@Envoy: Hehe.. thanks.
@Zewt: Haha.. well, hope we at least tie :) Thanks for the encouragement :)

In all honesty, I think Slovenia have played really well, despite their World Cup experience. Whereas, England have really gone to pot.
C'mon boys, pull your socks up and play some football!
My prediction for tomorrow's game would be:
Slovenia 1:2 England
Haha..I know, being really hopeful but I'm really hoping the reaction from fans during the past two games will boost moral and make them play well. They are after all, my team and a strong team, just that they don't play too well with their finger up their bum (so to speak)!
On the other hand, I will be keeping my fingers crossed for Slovenia to go through, as they have played marvellously and deserve a chance.
Either way, may the best team win.
:)

@LaiSan: Well said. I'd love to see both our teams advance, but that will be a little hard. We'll see, what happens. The best one will move on, because if we tie, it's a big success for us, and England need to beat us. If they do, then I will congratulate them. We'll see. I'd rather see 1:1, hehe. But maybe we surprise once again and win :)
June 23, 2010 12:23 AM
as you might guess, my favoured option is for England to beat Slovenia while the other game is drawn, sending us both through!
England often play rubbish until they absolutely must win and i hope this is the case tomorrow...please!
Slovenia's best chance is to attack, attack, attack because any goal scored means we'll have to score one more...good luck to us both! :)
June 23, 2010 1:22 AM
@adamantixx: I'd rather see we tie with England, but if we lose and still move on, that's fine to me, too. Unfortunately football is so unpredictable, that we can't choose what we want. We'll see what happens. I'm more nervous by the minute... It's now less than a day, hehe...
June 23, 2010 1:37 AM
GO SLOVENIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! :-)
June 23, 2010 3:33 AM
@Daisy: Thank youuuu :D Andiamo avanti Italia e Slovenia ;)

Good luck then! You're really into football arn't you? ;) Funny, wouldn't have pegged you for a "Hooligan" :) lol
June 23, 2010 7:14 AM
Since my bf is Slovenian, so I support Slovenia team with all my heart!!
They really play very well, even I don't watch and sport game and not know the exact rule, but I still know which team gets the goal.
I should say your boys are really surprised, they play so well, I think they should have confidence now. Because this year is your second chance to join the world cup, and you beat Algeria first, and then tied American, you are a world known great team now.
So if I have the chance to say something to your boys, I would like to tell them:
You're amazing great! Since your defense is so good already, then the other is just attack, attack your opponent without any fears, because you're great enough!
Even you don't move on, you still get the best score of your country's history,
you know you'll become more and more experienced and stronger, to join the next world cup!
Therefore, GOGOGO~SLOVENIA!! I support you to beat England!!
Btw, my prediction is 3:2 (Slovenia vs. England). If I guess right, do I have gift or any reward? (wink*)
June 23, 2010 11:40 AM
Unfortunately, I haven't been following the World Cup -- I know, for shame! I hear snippets here and there, though. Hopefully I'll be able to catch a game at a bar at 7 AM before it's over!
June 23, 2010 1:30 PM
@Carina: Haha... I'm not a Hooligan!!!! *attacks Carina, hehe. Kidding. No, I just like to watch the World Cup games. been watching every World cup since 1990 :)
@Lily: Awwwwww... you said it so well, thanks so much. So happy to have such a supportive girlfriend. What can I say? I'm touched :) Thank youuuuuuuu :D
@dee: I see. Hope you can watch today, good luck :)
June 23, 2010 5:55 PM
It's really so sad that your team can't move on, but I should say your defense is prefect. To be honest, England really played well no wonder, no matter on attack or defense both. But I know that because that was their critical game (also for you), and then watched your team vs. America, they knew that they couldn't be careless more, so they have to wake up and fight this battle with the whole heart.
So that means, your team is really so strong for England, I could feel their victory was a hard win, really! Your team is amazing, even the England lion can't belittle you any more.
I only know if your opponent is strong, then you have to become stronger. That's why England has to beat you down, because you're too great! :-)

@Lilsy: Thanks for your (double) comment, hehe. You said it very well :)
