I had "frog soup" at Guangzhou Street Night Market
Or how I'm getting Taiwaneser day by day

I ate a frog! Yep! I did it! And I still feel a bit So when we were leaving the famous Huaxi Street, we ended up in the nearby Guangzhou Street Night Market (廣州街夜市). It's not as neat and clean as Huaxi Street, but that's because it's not advertised as a tourist spot and therefore polished up. It's just meant for the locals, but some tourists also walk around there. Well, tourists like me. After few minutes of walking, my girlfriend saw the hawker that sells frogs. She asked me, if I wanted to try frog soup. I said "Yes, why not. How does it taste?" I asked. She said it's like chicken, so I said: "Cool let's give it a try!" I didn't intend to eat frogs that day, it was a very spontaneous decision.
I wish you a frogasmic stay! Have a look:

When we got the soup served, my girlfriend was a bit shocked surprised: "Oh, the frog is whole!" :o She tried frog soup before, but that one had the meat already cut into small pieces. But not this one, my friends, not this one.

Oh yeah, it was whole and very real. Only the head was chopped off. The grossest part were the little hands, haha. But guess what? It looks worse on photos than it real.

It really tastes like chicken! Really. The meat is soft, but not plenty.
The taste of the frog is not really strong. I remember eating horse or even mutton, that's a flavor I still remember. But not frog. The soup was good, though. There was a lot of basil in it, the flavor seemed a bit minty. And I didn't make any funny faces, you can ask my girl. I just grabbed it and ate it. Sure I posed for some photos, hahaha. Wanna gross out my friends from back in Europe. Ps: I'm not French ;-)

So did my photos gross you out? Not yet? How about some chicken feet?

Some days before I ate frog, I treated myself some chicken feet in Keelung.

Please vote on my little poll. Thank you.

I ate them at home, they're boneless and crunchy a little, but yummy. They go well together with the Taiwanese beer. Now tell me, ain't I becoming a real Taiwanese? ;-)
Would you try frog soup?
And a bonus video for you. Kym from herrohachi shared an interesting video with me. Those who know her, know how awesome she is, so I don't need to repeat that here, just enjoy it:

May 6, 2010 12:04 AM
eurgh!! i had fried frog's legs, they actually looked like mini KFC hot wings and tasted nice but a whole frog like that would definitely put me off being adventurous with food!! if it were cut up, i wouldn't mind eating it *shivers* u were very very very brave! hats off!!
May 6, 2010 12:17 AM
@Kim: ok, I admit seeing the whole fella (only without head) did make me sweat a little, but it was still ok, at least his legs didn't move, haha. :P
@Manju, Jaimie: "=.=
@Kit: Thanks. But the frog looks scarier on photos than in real. Really. It's so small and harmless in real, but these pics make it big and scary :P
May 6, 2010 12:23 AM
If you kiss a frog, it turns into a prince. If you eat a frog, it turns into shit! LOL
I will never ever eat frog!
When you'll eat snake, make sure you warn me before you post it. I'll stay away from your blog for at least until the next post!
May 6, 2010 1:46 AM
Did you close off the poll already? I can't vote. I want to vote! *stomps*
May 6, 2010 1:47 AM
@Johana: I didn't try the snake, no. But I did make some photos and will blog about it :) Oh, haven't closed the poll. Just my blog's causing some problems with polls, because all links open in new tabs. Please try again and click on a link near the poll I provided. It will lead you to a new page with the same poll. Thanks.

Excuse me... i think I need to throw up!!
May 6, 2010 2:04 AM
@Angele: I guess I most likely won't be featured on Ti Pomme D'Amour :P
Sorry for make you feel sick, though "-_-
May 6, 2010 2:08 AM
I actually have had frog before. To be exact, barbecued frog legs.
May 6, 2010 2:16 AM
Ya i've eaten lots of frogs but they're in pieces, not as a whole. I love chicken feet too, its so fatty and jelly-like. We chinese eat weird things huh? But they're usually good for health.
May 6, 2010 2:17 AM
@Kasia: Aha, and how did you like the legs?
@Chris: Yes, Chinese eat everything. I can't eat everything, but so far I tried many things, many that my Western fellows wouldn't :-)
May 6, 2010 2:24 AM
Never. Ever.
How could I eat the ones I love kissing so much????
May 6, 2010 2:35 AM
I voted! It seems that I'm the only one who voted no so far! Hahaha...weird people you are!
May 6, 2010 2:36 AM
yeah i wanna try the soup! well it's very common to eat frog in south east asia too... just this frog soup rocksssssssssss hahaha
btw did you try dog meat there as well?
May 6, 2010 3:00 AM
@Daisy: Haha.. true! You can't eat your prince :P
@Johana: Haha.. yes. You may be the only non-frog eater and we will bully you, bahaha :P
@fufu: Yes, I know, frogs are common, maybe not as common as chicken :P
Hey, I'll never try dog meat, nor I will look for it. But I'm sure it can be found in Taiwan, but must be some underground place.
May 6, 2010 3:08 AM
When I was in Chengdu I ate this frog-dish. It was only the legs, but so many of them. I thought they must have killed hundreds of frogs just to fill my stomach. In the end it didn't even really fill my stomach.
So you got a whole frog. I didn't expect the skin is eatable.
I'm still waiting for that seafood restaurant post, where you show us the gems and rarities of the wide oceans prepared Chinese style.
May 6, 2010 3:15 AM
@Junjie: Just the legs is really little meat, yeah. A frog leg is like nothing.
Hmm, I wonder what seafood restaurant do you mean? Did I mention any? I forgot. I have so many things to blog, always something new, so I may have forgotten something I've announced early on.
May 6, 2010 3:28 AM
It was long time ago, when I was a kid. But from what I remember they tasted kind of like...chicken. lol At least that how I described the taste when I was little. ;)
May 6, 2010 4:54 AM
Haha, I'm feeling a little grossed out from looking at the photos.
I have been told also that frog taste like chicken. But somehow I know I won't ever eat this.
May 6, 2010 9:06 AM
We have the same thing in Malaysia!! =) It tasted so good right? :P
May 6, 2010 9:15 AM
i just had frog porridge less than a week ago and i have to say mine looked a whole lot better than this! haha
why didn't they skin off the black skin? it would have looked better and less on the EEWW factor >_<
May 6, 2010 10:07 AM
@adamantixx: I think I was just brave :P
@Kasia and Shingo: Yes, they do taste like chicken.
@Crystal: It was good, but not as good to become my fav food, that I'd eat daily, like fried dumplings, for example :)
@Sharon: This one really looks gross on the pics and that's the fun I have, when I read readers' reactions. But in real, it's just a poor little fella, haha. Only the little hands are scary :P
May 6, 2010 12:14 PM
man, cant seem to comment on your other posts...
May 6, 2010 1:37 PM
@zewt: Ah, really? Which one? Some have comments disabled, but most not.
May 6, 2010 1:41 PM
OMG!!!!! Thank god i saw tha after having my lunch!!
I'm sorry but that has to be the most disgusting thing i have ever seen. Couldn't even read the post!!!!
May 6, 2010 1:54 PM
Yummy frog soup, wasn't it? hahaha I will never dare to try it, whole frog. Here in Thailand we also eat frogs...but not famous like that. We have frog meat salad in Thai style..and I like it too, but whole frog without head in the cup of soup? haha NOOO Well, nice experience of you to share here with friends. ^_^
May 6, 2010 2:32 PM
Oh. My. Gosh.
I first tried to do your poll [which didn't work :\ ] and said "No, not in a million years" but then I thought, well maybe if I was really drunk AND it was cut up into small pieces..AND I was really really hungry, then yes maybe LOL
Wow, but oh gosh, the skin they left on the frog just scares me. Oh and their feets and hands...*shivers* You could be a great contestant on Fear Factor (if they still have that show on!). They often make contestants eat bugs alive! Okay, it might be a step up from eating a headless dead frog...I admit but you know, I can't eat what you ate!
I use to like the sauce they put on chicken feet at Chinese restaurants as a kid but now I can't eat chicken feet. There's barely any meat on it...the skin is all wrinkly and wobbly and just gross for me haha. PLUS, my girlfriend Jasmin was cooking chicken feet last year and I saw her clipping the toenails of the raw chicken feet before cooking it. Oh gosh - I can't get it out of my mind now. Seeing her clipping the toenails was just the end of it for me. Plus the way she cooked it Thai style, the feet looked "glow in the dark" after. I told her too! :)
May 6, 2010 2:42 PM
@Sabrina: Hahaha.. Come on! :P You've surely seen worse things :P
@Kanchana: Aw, thanks for your comment here :) Yes, it was yummy, the soup. The frog wasn't bad either, actually no particular taste, nothing worth to remember. I like to shock my readers a little, haha.
@Karen: You can click on the link above the poll, that one works :) Ah, sorry to shock you :P But that was what I hoped for, hehe. Wow, I think I also wouldn't like to see the chicken toe nails clipped in front of me. I try to imagine chicken legs as a piece of meet, like a sausage, I try not to think that I'm eating the very feet that the chicken used for walking O.o Lol. All this looks worse on pics than in real, that's my basic opinion :)
May 6, 2010 3:08 PM
Thanks ... and no thanks! :P
Thank G I'm a veg... But I wouldn't even eat these exotic animals b4 that!
May 6, 2010 3:40 PM
@Kyh: You sure you don't want some froggies? :P
May 6, 2010 5:07 PM
I've eaten frog! Seriously! I have a friend who works as a chef for a hotel in London and when he came here for a visit he cooked meals for me that he learned from his job. The frog was like barbecued and arranged very fancy, and I know it would break his heart if I did not eat it. So I did, and I liked it! You're right, it tastes like chicken :)
May 6, 2010 6:15 PM
you ate frogs! *feints*
May 6, 2010 10:50 PM
@Krissy: High five to you! Let's create a blog like Ti Pomme d'Amour and only blog about preparing frogs :P Your dish sounds very yummy, must have tasted better than mine :)
@Jamaipanese: Hey, let's not exaggerate. I ate frog. Just 1 :P
May 6, 2010 11:00 PM
Nino : Frogs legs are a norm in M'sia. But the whole frog minus the head is just.. disturbing.
And yeah, tastes just like chicken! Hahahah!
Chicken legs are a norm here too. So doesn't quite make you Taiwanese yet. Just very Asianish. Heh
May 7, 2010 6:56 AM
Woah! You can see the whole frogs in there... :O
Actually I ate a lot of froggy dish in here too, usually it's cooked with salty bokcay and it's delicious! ^^
The meat is more tender than chicken, I think.. :)
May 7, 2010 10:20 AM
@Izso: Yea, I know frog legs in Malaysia are normal, but I never wanted to try them before. Chicken legs are also found all over Asia, I know, but the ones I bought here are Taiwanese, so I feel like Taiwanese a bit :)
@Ceecile: Yes, you're right. Meet is like a young chicken, hehe..
May 7, 2010 12:43 PM
I just scrolled really fast when I read that you had photos...
May 7, 2010 11:14 PM
@Nashe: Cool, haha. Just take it easy :)
May 7, 2010 11:19 PM
I can roughly remember something about seafood. Maybe I mixed it up with something or someone else? Anyways, seems like you have a great time.
May 8, 2010 9:33 PM
I've not yet had the chance to eat frog soup but honestly: I find it interesting.
But just a few days after arriving in Taiwan, I had the most delicious fried frog legs. I'd eat those anytime.
Am not a big fan of chicken feet though. I've had my share of skin already. My host mothers love them, however. Says they're really good for the skin.
May 10, 2010 1:54 AM
@Junjie: I'm having the best time of my life in Taiwan :)
@Sander: I like chicken legs, although I first had a hard time to try. I guess Taiwan changes a man, huh? :)
May 11, 2010 4:49 PM
I want the Taiwan beer seriously! hahaha
We have frog meat in Kuching :)
If you would be here in Kuching one day, please remind me to bring you to eat this type of foods and some are ilegal. we are not suppose to eat them but for you... I can try to arrange :)
May 25, 2010 11:07 PM
@Netster: Taiwanese beer is really good.
Ohhh... Illegal food? Do you mean cat or dog? Thanks but no thanks, that's a bit too much for me, hehe.
May 26, 2010 4:30 AM
I had frog before, I was trick by my dad saying it was chicken meat.. It sure does taste like chicken..
November 21, 2010 9:41 AM
@Sarah Wu: I think only the image of a beheaded frog looks a bit gross (at least to me), but the meat is like chicken indeed, so it's not so special to try it :)
