I browsed my old photos from my travels today and I realized, that I've been in Kuala Lumpur (
Malaysia) just about a year ago. So I thought why not posting some interesting and funny pics about that lovely Asian country that I've taken during my three stays there (in 2005, 2007, 2008/09). So here's something for you: 15
unusual things I've encountered while traveling around Malaysia. People who know me, know that
I love that country, therefore please don't think that I want to show it in a bad light. I've written about your country a lot already (check the labels) - this is just for fun. I put the pics in the following cathegories: Engrish, Awsome, Tsk tsk tsk and Uniquely Malaysia. Enjoy :)
1 Uniquely Malaysia: You won't see politicians wrapped in flags in my country :P I wonder what my Malaysian friend
Zewt thinks about this. I have no idea what the party stands for. But I must say - they look dynamic :P
2. Uniquely Malaysia: Yes, you have Miami beach in Penang Malaysia. Awesome! I think I saw Pamela Anderson swimming there in a red suit. But I'm not too sure :P
3. Uniquely Malaysia: Mat rempit a.k.a.
illegal street racers look like the two on the motorcycles. I'm not too sure, if those two do that, because while I was in Penang, they usually raced on Friday and Saturday evenings and because of them I couldn't sleep :( Malaysian motorcyclists are fearless: Be it torrential rains or scorching sun, they will move forward somehow :)
4. Awesome Malaysia: Tak nak ("don't want") would be loosely translated as Say no, in this case to smoking. I think the banner is cool and convincing. :P What do you think?
5. Engrish? No, although it sounds like the English slang term 'hoe' (a promiscuous person), it has nothing to do with that. It's a romanization of a company name in Chinese, probably Hokkien. Am I right? :P
6. Uniquely Malaysia: Malaysians love to modify cars. I've seen a lot of them, many in Hello Kitty style, but there's quite few with the Doraemon (famous Japanese anime) style. You won't see this here :)
7. Engrish! Yes, this one does have the grammar messed up a little. But for me, it was more funny to see that there's nobody working on anything, hehe. Maybe it was just a day off for the workers. I'm sure they worked tirelessly the next day, when I wasn't there :P
8. Awesome Malaysia: This piece of art near the Petronas twin towers is entirely made of empty soft drink cans. It's pretty cool, isn't it? :)
9. Uniquely Malaysia: This is a
ficus benjamina, a plant that is commonly found in our offices in huge flower pots. You would never find this plant outside in the ground here. But Malaysia has a tropical climate and these things grow from the ground just like that. Amazing :)
10. Engrish: I think there's a "th" too much. :) And in Malaysia, the Christmas is always warm(th), hehe. Not like here, where I'm freezing my butt off -_- The second pic is from Genting and it's awesome, right? :)
11. Tsk tsk tsk Malaysia: I saw this after we parked the car under the First World Hotel in Genting, the famous Malaysian mountain resort. Numbers of call girls are all over the walls. :(
12. Awesome Malaysia: This is like a small indoor theme park and when I was snapping a pic of that colorful whale-like monorail floating thingy, happy Malaysians waved at me. You can be sure, that Malaysians are very friendly and funny people. They have a lot of fun especially in groups :)
13. Tsk tsk tsk Malaysia: This is something I didn't like about the country: littering. And this one is especially bad, because it's near a temple and at Chinese new year. I've seen Malaysians throwing trash on the streets or even from the car very lightly. I'm not saying my country is the cleanest, but Malaysia has a lot of room for improvement in this regard ;)
14. Awesome Malaysia: I think this guy is cool :) Enjoying his ride without the need of an aircon, which is a must-have in every Malaysian car. And yes, you will see things like that in my country, too. But not in the city, more in the country side :)
In conclusion: I've written this post to somehow round up my whole Malaysia experience. From all the foreign countries I've ever been, I've stayed the longest in Malaysia, that's why it's been a second home to me and it'll always hold a special place in my heart. But in 2010 I will turn a new page in my book. I will go to another beautiful Asian country and I hope it will become my new second home. You can be sure that I will write a lot about my life there. Hope everything goes well. And if you haven't yet figured out which country I mean,
check this photo.
Thanks to everyone, who made my Malaysia-experience unique and unforgettable. I'm moving on. my future is elsewhere. But I hope to visit Malaysia again one day :)

in fairness, there are lots of engrish existing in Msia lol. you didn't go to the kampung2... therefore you missed the most 'engrish' you could get. hehe. i love the way you represent Msia. i am most likely wont be able to represent it in the way that you did. thanks for loving Msia that much. :P

What makes you pick Taiwan?
It would be a headache for me since I don't read Chinese very well.
December 6, 2009 11:23 AM
The photo with the politicians wrapped in a flag is interesting. In some countries, if the politicians were to do that, they would've been accused of being a nationalist, lol. But it's good that Malaysians don't make a big deal out of patriotism.
The car in the 7th photo's really cute. I would love to see a Hello Kitty style though.

When I saw photo3, I smiled, because seemed the landlord has the same name with me, hehe...
I've never been to Malaysia before, but I think in your experience,
you were really close to the real Malaysia, and got a lot of warmth there, because people there seem are very friendly.
Hope you will have a brand new experience to write your new book at next year!
Good luck!

Number of call girls on the walls??? Really??? Hmmmmmm....how come i've never seen them!!!
December 6, 2009 5:41 PM
@Ejean: Hehe, thank you. I try my best to represent your country well. Actually, I never really looked around to snap Engrish, that would be kinda odd. I just had fun there :)
@Ai Shang: Love! :) And the characters can be learned through time :)
@Van: In Malaysia you will see a flag almost everywhere, be it city or country side. My country is totally different in this regard.
@LilyChen: Yes, Malaysia was great, I really lived there, not just visited. But now it's time to go to another country :)
@Sabrina: These numbers are in the underground garage near the lifts. :) Maybe you see next time :)

December 6, 2009 7:43 PM
@Sharon: :)) Hi 'proud Penangnite' :) I had to write a disclaimer, cuz I haver people coming on my blog lately, not knowing me and twisting my words.. sheesh.. some people. Yes, I love your country and never really cared bout politics. Politics are effed up here, too. I just enjoyed the people, culture, food and the landscape :)
December 6, 2009 7:49 PM
it looks a very interesting place to visit and i'm sure you have many happy memories, i enjoyed all the pictures but...
...couldn't you have shown us a few of the pretty Malay girls too? ;)
December 6, 2009 8:28 PM
I couldn't figure out the country from the picture, till I read Ai Shiang's comments. So that must be the Taipei 101.
I will be dropping by Taiwan somewhere next April. Maybe we might chance upon each other, bro!
Nice photos and observations on Malaysia, but hey, you are picking on our English. =p
December 6, 2009 8:32 PM
@adamantixx: Yes, it was interesting indeed :D As for the ladies, I didn't really snap many pics of them, one of those you see here, it's an older post :)
December 6, 2009 8:34 PM
@Shingo T: Oh, yeah, Ai Shang was right :) Of course I'd like to meet you, it's my pleasure :D We'll stay in touch through blogging. You're the 2nd who'd like to meet up, first was the cute Stefanie :)
Hey, aren't you Singaporean? :P I'm not picking on anyone's Engrish.. ehm, English ;)
December 6, 2009 8:38 PM
hahaha... we would probably be laughing our bums off if politician in the Netherlands would be walking around or being photographed with the Dutch flag... but I think in those countries it's normal, and yeah, why not!
You know what I loved about KL? Indian food... :P Haven't seen so much of the country, or the city, as when I was there, it was during Chinese NY! Everything was closed...
loves
December 7, 2009 2:25 AM
@Shirley: Yes, in Europe we may laugh, but some exotic countries do that, I'm thinking about USA, hehe :P Agree, KL has delicious Indian food. Yummy. :)
December 7, 2009 2:32 AM
awww i love it!! really like the art piece. very cute. i appreciated this look into malaysia :)
December 7, 2009 7:23 AM
Pity I can't see the pictures in my office. Only flickr gets through the firewalls. Otherwise I'm sure I'd have something to say!
Just one thing though, our Engrund may be bad but it's no way any worse off than the Shanghai-nese and Beijing folks! Their literal translations of food names is ridiculous!
December 7, 2009 7:30 AM
@floreta: Thank you.
@Izso: Ok, then you need to come back and check the pics :) I'd really appreciate your 2 cents :)
December 7, 2009 7:49 AM

December 7, 2009 12:21 PM
@Leah: Malaysia is fun :)
@zewt: I did not call those numbers :) Honestly ;)

December 8, 2009 2:09 AM

December 8, 2009 2:22 AM

Malaysia boleh!
Share a Msian joke with you about the astronaut/space program.
The Russians called their spacemen 'Cosmonauts'.
The USA called theirs 'Astronauts'.
China called theirs 'Taikonaut'.
Malaysia is 'Can-or-not'
December 9, 2009 10:12 AM
1. Maybe photoshop did a good job.
2. 'To Let' is everywhere here.
3. Oh? I didn't know about the beach! What a shame.
4. Aiyo, obviously the 2 motorcyclists are not so called Mat rempit la. Hahaha! They always race in a gang at night. Wanna kill them. Fast and Furious? Wth.
5. Awesome banner but looks like no one cares.
6. Yes. It's Hokkien. Malaysians are good in creating new words. =p
7. They usually like to set a theme for their lovely car. Hello kitty, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse and bla. Like eww. I prefer the original look. More classy. =)
8. Much broken than mine. Haha. THICK SKIN.
9. Yes! Awesome Malaysia! Totally agree with it!
10. Oh? My house got my house got!!! Haha.
11. I thought the warmth is right. Erm, no idea. Maybe it's too warm here.
12. Ahaha!!! Guess what? I wrote one before at somewhere else. Of course, it was a joke. It was my guy's phone number and something like "Looking for Hot Guy?" Vandalism, hehehe.
13. Told you, from my house to genting is just 45mins. =)
14. I HATE THIS VERY MUCH! I hate those parents who ask their children to throw the rubbish everywhere too. No strict law here. That's why. :(
15. Somehow I pity the guy leh. :(
Wow, the longest comment from STEFANIE! =p
December 9, 2009 3:58 PM
@Pinkpurplelizard: Malaysia boleh! :-D Thanks for your joke, hehe :)
@Stefanie: Wow, sis!!! Thanks so much for the loveliest comment. I did check your comments and compare with the pics again, hehe. Well, I did say I donno, if they're mat rempit, cuz haven't seen them at night. And the littering is bad, that's hardly to deny, I saw it a lot of times :( The rest is just cool, hehe. Thanks again ;)

The numbers aren't the only problem. The other day a group of seniors from another school went for a trip. One guy came up to two of the seniors (who are male) and asked "Would you like some girls?". They found it really hilarious and burst out laughing on the spot.
LOL- your need for a bathroom must be really urgent. Why on earth would you need to phone up somebody for a toilet? XD
Besides Grammar mistakes, you might have already heard lots of Manglish here (similar to Singlish in Singapore). Personally, I found them rather annoying and so I prefer using proper English.
January 5, 2011 3:21 PM
@Joan: Well, many who make mistakes, also think their English is proper and correct ;) I've heard a lot of Manglish, yes. I think it was cute, although sometimes a bit hard to communicate.
