I was there, when...

Here's another awesome list for you. I was watching TV and they showed some events from the past years. And that reminded me, that I am residing in this world for nearly 3 decades and a lot of things happened during this time. So I wanted to make a list of 8 world events, that happened in my life time and affected me somehow, can be literally or just emotionally. Here they are:

  1. Slovenian independence (1990/91): My small country Slovenia was part of a big multi ethnic country Yugoslavia, but 1990 we voted for independence and majority was for an independent state. I was too young to vote, though. In June 1991 we became independent and a 10 days long war started. I remember hiding in the basement of our block, while tanks rolled through my hometown. That was a scary moment, but lucky me, the war was over very fast and I didn't see any shooting or killing... Pheew...
  2. Guns 'N' Roses (1992): I remember that at age 12, suddenly all my class mates defined themselves by the music they listened to. You could choose among rock, metal, punk, grunge and rave or techno. I was pretty late in that regard, but one day a friend borrowed me a cassette of an Guns 'N' Roses album and I copied it and listened to it every day until I knew the songs by heart. Yea, that's how we did it. I really liked their songs and then I was one of the rockers. And in my heart, I'm still a rocker, although I don't classify myself anymore, I like all kinds of music, even pop, yes, even Asian pop. But at that time the music you liked defined you. It was serious business, hehe.
  3. Total eclipse of the sun (1999): I remember, it was August, I was home alone and I went out and saw how the sun got slowly covered by the moon and how the degrees dropped. Wow, it was definitely a goose bumps moment and I'm so glad that I've experienced this in real. Kinda made me feel how small and insignificant we are compared to the planets, stars and the whole universe.
  4. Millennium (2000): I remember, how hopeful and anxious people were in 1999 anticipating the year 2000. We all thought it will be a new Millennium, although it actually started in 2001, but nobody really cared. That 2000 was really a magic number for all of us. We felt like we'll suddenly be in the future, that everything will be so advanced... well, nothing really happened. I remember, how some people were afraid that the whole internet might crash, haha... That was funny :P
  5. 11th September (2001): That was really scary! I was 21, at home watching CNN, like I always did. It was 1pm here when it happened, suddenly the changed to breaking news and talked about an accidental plane crash. I remember how confused everybody was (including me). When that second plane crashed, it became creepy. What's going on? What's happening? Someone attacked America? Will there be war? I was seriously nervous. Then the twin towers collapsed and my heart was pounding like crazy. I was sooo pro America soon after that, we all were... then Bush screwed up... -_-
  6. Tsunami (2004): Ok, that was equally scary like 9/11. It happened just 1 month before I planned to fly to Singapore (and Asia) for the first time, in the region, so to speak. The images of the casualties and all the destruction, especially in Banda Ace, were excruciating. Another moment, where mankind saw how fickle nature can be and how powerless we really are on this planet.
  7. Barack Obama's historic win (2008): I followed US elections almost a year, I was for Obama since he started his campaign in 2007, I always watched his stump speeches, followed the campaign, the ups and downs up to the election day, where I stayed up until 6am to listen to his victory speech, which really really gave me goose bumps and I probably teared up a little. It's a moment where one just had to be alive and hear that speech live (even if on TV). And I'm not disappointed with what he has done so far, I mean, look at his plate and look what Bush has left behind.
  8. Death of Michael Jackson and Twitter (2009): Ok, his death didn't really had such a big effect on my life, but it was definitely a shocker. I will always remember the day it happened, because 25 June is our independence day. It's also the first time that something major happened and I found out about it on Twitter's trending topics. It was quite an emotional day for the whole world. I had the feeling we were a bit united for a short while by looking at his fans from all over the world how they loved him and his music. And it was the time, where I realized that Twitter has become such a powerful news source. It definitely changed internet and affected my life a bit this year.
Ok, this is my list and it's gotten quite long :) I dare you to make your own list or just comment here in my comment section and tell me which events in your life time had the biggest effect on you or your life.

Similar to you I'm more liberal about my music taste today. I try everything (except Asian pop)

I like some Asian pop, like Hyori, Namie, Ayu and Jolin, some songs are great, but I'm not obsessed about it. Generally speaking, I don't listen to music like I used to in the 90s... Times changed.

Really? I guess I'm more of a sentimental type. I still have old CDs and old recordings. Although I've heard them a thousand times, they are still on top of my playlist.

I think for me so far, 11th sept. is still the craziest moment! When I heard it, I immediately turned on the tv, and watching it non stop, in shock! as in... HUH! WTH HAPPENED? IS THAT POSSIBLE!!! NOOOO WAY???!!!
I was that much in shock, I can still remember it like it happened yesterday, though it's already almost 10 years ago... time flies..

ps: Diana's dead was a shock in Europe too, though I didn't care that much...

Oh, I have like 100 cds I bought in the nineties, I just don't listen to them, it's all mp3 for me now.

adamantixx

I'm sure the moon landing would be on top of my list. But I'm born a decade later :)

Do you know that today is 11/9? Same numbers, just changed. Spooky! Yes, that was quite a day, probably the single most incredible day on TV, there was just 1 news everywhere. Amazing.

girl in stiletto

Yea, I love G'n'R, too :) Sweet Child O'Mine always gives me goosebumps when I hear it. Well, Diana was shocking, yes, but it didn't really strike me as 9/11.

Gosh, didn't know about the independence of your country. Having to experience war must be really dreadful.

Ninooo! The indonesia part that hit by tsunami the most is Banda Aceh not Bandar Ace LOLLL just thought I could point out a bit :p

Tsunami's really shocking to all of us here. I don't really witness it but I remember cringing and feeling like crying seeing all those coverage in tv. I hope there won't be a second one with all these earthquakes here.

I also remember millenium! People think the world's gonna end. Why do they love predicting the end of the world so much? Now they did it again with the whole "world will end in the beginning of 2010" wtf

It is interesting to see the different events that happened in the world at certain times of your life, to look back, and reflect. In the scope of things all things are very small and dont mean much but to 1 person, so many things can have such deep meaning. Also, it is funny to me to see how there is always something going on that some people think is the biggest thing ever. People have to create panick, disorder, drama (2000 and 2012), I think that it is this way in general. Fortunately this happens mostly in groups of people whereas there are still individuals that have some sound mind and do not need to create stories to find a meaning to life. I like your list and love that you are able to remember what was going on with YOU during that specific time.

Oh, thank you for your lovely comment. I totally agree with you, people tend to read too much into some events, while they totally neglect some other (like Darfur). I think in 2012 we'll have a rise of stupid cults and when we turn to 2013, it'll suddenly fade away. Yea, I have a very good memory of my life, hehe :)

Great posts! I agree, when mj died, obama became president and 9/11 are in a way our generations defining moments. We will always remember where we were when we learned the news. I would always throw in their the death of Princess Di..

And I can imagine for a slovenian, the war must be maybe the biggest of them all. What an horrible ordeal to have to experience as a kid.

Oh slovenia just recently got its independence then, i thought it had been independent for a long long time. the way you described hiding in the basement reminded me of 'the diary of Anne Frank'. have you read that book? i hope it was nothing as scary for you

Yes, you're right on the defining moments. As for the war, I'd say it wasn't that bad. We only had 10 days and few casualties. Croatia and Bosnia had war for years. Ok, it wasn't a pleasure, but I didn't feel that bad then.

Manju

G'n'R fan? :P Great! As for Anne Frank, I read that book, but I can't compare my situation to hers :) I was still very lucky.
