Fake commentators
I like to read blogs and comment. I comment a lot. And I also subscribe to follow-up comments, because I like to see what others said and what the blog owner will reply to my comment. So I get a lot of emails every day in my inbox. And sometimes I notice stuff like on the screen caps below. People who copy and paste one and the same comment to various blogs I also follow (call me blog detective, hehe). This guy managed to do that 3 times so far, maybe there'll be more. So check this: Manju's, Mel's and Toothfairy's blog:
No. 1
No. 2
No. 3
Now I wonder. You want to promote your blog, right? You want other bloggers to read your blog, follow you and comment, right? So why do you start with a fake flattery? You clearly didn't read any of these posts, because you use exactly the same comment over and over again and the whole point for you is to lure new readers to your blog. This is very hypocritical, don't you think?
I know Mel and Manju, they are very kind bloggers, who always respond back, so this post is partly written for them to not fall into a trap. And I wrote it also to illustrate this type of behavior, which is happening a lot lately (or maybe I'm noticing it now?). I don't know.
I'm all for promoting your blog. But the best way is to read the blog post and honestly comment on the topic. A good comment will be a better promotion than fake flattery and it will make the other blogger curious about you. So you don't need to link to your blog extra, the link is already in your name.
I'm not claiming that I'm always the perfect commentator. And I know all of you aren't as well. Sometimes we just browse through a post and comment something short. That's legitimate. Sometimes we drop a funny comment or a silly comment without really reading the whole post. Even that's ok. But these copy/paste fake flattering comments are just over the top. Now that's just my opinion.
What do you think?
Update: The person did leave a normal comment on Mel's latest post. Maybe he read my post or maybe he changed his tactics. I don't know, but as for now, he's... busted! :P

No wonder. Your blog rocks! I guess the more popular you are, the more of these you get :)
October 29, 2009 1:37 AM
yes that is annoying

Flo
Yeah -_-
October 29, 2009 3:09 AM
i have to admit, sometimes i find it annoying when ppl leave one-liner and ends it with "you havent dropped by my blog for a while, please do so...."
like how can you tell i havent dropped by? maybe i was too busy that i only got the chance to read but not to comment? or that im sleepy enough to type but still wanna read the post?
oh well, maybe that's just me :P
October 29, 2009 4:46 AM

Girl in stiletto
You have a good point. I'm not as popular as you, so I don't get these kind of messages, but that would be annoying. Commenting and reading is not a 'duty', it's a hobby, a passion, free time activity, right? And you can't always be free and comment on every post.
Manju
Hahaha.. That's a good one :) Comparable to my Obama-stunt earlier today *bows & claps
October 29, 2009 4:56 AM
LMAO!
i think....we should get you on CSI, you'd make a damn fine detective ;)
there are lots of hypocrites like that going around. it's really lame.
October 29, 2009 4:57 AM
wahhahaha... I've spotted one before too, don't remember her name, but damn, she did get a lot of followers with that!!!! around 500 or so... It was really annoying, so I've spread it in a post as well... hate spam... SO Thank you, for posting this!! I think you deserve a hug from all of us now!
*loves*

Manju
Hey, you're not bad yourself either! Isn't it the point of blogging to observe weird stuff? :) I mean, I read a post about a Facebook weirdo. That blogger is really a good detective herself :P
October 29, 2009 5:03 AM
Toothfairy
Hehe.. you're welcome. I must say though, that I did spot this guy drop an on-topic comment on Mel's blog, I think. Maybe he read my post? ;)
October 29, 2009 5:05 AM
I have this mathematic question wanna be commenters have to answer on my blog before commenting. For a long time it worked like magic and I had like 1 spam comment a month, but during the last 6 months things changed. I might switch to something different. Now I get a lot of these worthless comments. ah by the way....
Extremely beautiful blog with some really wonderful Posts&Pictures..

Junjie
Ah, maybe those commentators learned some better math :) Thank you for your compliments.
October 29, 2009 5:39 AM
OMG! I didn't know he posted that same thing. you are too sweet for bringing this up. It is a bit annoying isn't it. grrrr.... I'll be sending you a private message on twitter in a bit about the same topic. =)
October 29, 2009 6:34 AM
Mel
Hehe.. yea, it gets annoying when it's so obvious. Maybe he can redeem himself. He already posted a normal comment, we shall see, hehe :)
October 29, 2009 6:36 AM
Can't a guy read but not post? Ish. Attention whores.
October 29, 2009 7:07 AM

People can do whatever they want :) I just shared my opinion ;)
October 29, 2009 7:14 AM
This is a beautiful post. I wished I could write like this.
You are handsome, and please visit my blog. =p
October 29, 2009 11:31 AM
On a less joking note, I totally agree with what you say. Normally, I just totally don't bother to visit the site of "fake" commentators.
Ok, now visit my blog because I love each alphabet that you type on this awesome post.
October 29, 2009 11:35 AM
agree with you on this..^^ we want honest opinions and not spam..
you have such a great blog! (beware..this is not spam, hehe.. ^^)
I love reading your blog, so keep it up!! ^^
October 29, 2009 11:49 AM
Lol I've noticed the name "DayDreamer" on some comments while reading blogs but I never really paid attention to his comments! You're definitely the Sherlock Holmes of the blogosphere :D
October 29, 2009 3:32 PM
Shingo T
You're funny or to rephrase it: wakaka.. nvm la.. don bother bout you la.. wakaka.. lolz. :-)
ÅnGe|e
Thank you, yes, I'm Sherlock Holmes, at your service, madam :P
October 29, 2009 3:57 PM
Argh, Manju posted the comment I wanted to make......anyways,
I got a similar type of comment on my schoolgirl complex post, with a link to a Japansugoi post which I have visited and commented on long ago. Odd, huh?
October 29, 2009 7:02 PM
The Envoy
Faster, mate! Comment faster! XD
October 29, 2009 7:13 PM
Shingo T reply up there is damn funny.
MKL: I really didn't know there is such thing. Seriously, if I have no interest to read other's blogs. I will NOT read. These people are weird. I really don't see the point of promoting this way. Really.
October 30, 2009 2:58 AM
Erny
How could I ever disagree with you, Erny? :)
October 30, 2009 3:04 AM
i always think that the saddest thing about spamming is that somebody actually takes the time to go round posting the same comments on blog after blog.
it may gain a few extra hits but is hardly the best way to make friends is it?
October 30, 2009 4:54 AM
@ The envoy : You have been pwned ;P kidding hahah
@ MKL : actually i told the guy very nicely that most bloggers are really nice ppl and would visit him back, and it's the least he could do to be honest in his comments. He deleted that, but looks like he got the message
i'm such a busybody xD
but hypocrites bug the heck out of me
October 30, 2009 6:43 AM
haha yes you're right
some ppl just comment just because they feel like promoting theirs
like WTF?!
it's like "hey i click on ur ads, do click mine too" !@#$%#
thats so not sincere!
October 30, 2009 5:04 PM
Ax
You are so right.
Manju
He deleted your wise words about honesty? That tells a lot :)
Sharon
My blog is ad free, but I should click your ads, thanks for reminding me :)
October 30, 2009 5:12 PM
Poor thing la...i think he must be new and just desperate for people to read his blog...don't think he meant any harm :p
October 30, 2009 8:16 PM
sabrina
I'm sure he meant no harm :)
October 30, 2009 9:51 PM
There are so many of those types out there, aren't there? Annoys the crap out of m and I won't bother responding coz it's obviously a one-off visit for them, regardless of their stupid flattery.
October 31, 2009 1:07 AM
Nashe
Yes, there's many of them. And the best is to ignore them when you spot them.
October 31, 2009 2:19 AM
yeah i did came across ppl who leave me lovely comments... only to find out they do so at every other blog. so fake n turn off!
but hey, u r just the exact opposite and i totally love u for that, nino. =)
October 31, 2009 11:35 PM
Adeline
Aiyo! Making me shy! :P Thanks a lot for your touching compliment :)
November 1, 2009 12:37 AM

November 2, 2009 12:17 PM

November 2, 2009 3:08 PM
Andhari
Who wouldn't wanna be punched in the face by you? :P
Sharon
Hehe, I know you didn't mean that. But as a friend, I'd like you to earn some more money, so why not :)
November 2, 2009 7:28 PM
when you see such comments... chances are they didnt really read your blog and certainly, they dont know if your blog is beautiful or otherwise...
November 3, 2009 8:58 PM
zewt
Exactly! And judging by so many comments, many bloggers can relate to this, hehe.
November 3, 2009 9:04 PM
You're right, he is not sincere and put his motives into interest. Anyway self advertising blogs usually are attention seekers.
November 6, 2009 1:07 AM
Vampie
Yes... some go too far. I say good stuff doesn't need much advertisement :)
November 6, 2009 1:16 AM
If it's good, it is good and you don't need to do anything to whore for traffic. =)
November 6, 2009 9:58 AM
The Happy Bitch
Those weren't exactly my words, but I meant the same :)
November 6, 2009 3:55 PM
HAHAHA!! I love this! Move over Nancy Drew!! Did this person commment on your blog to, or did you just spot him on other blogs? I guess I need to check out more what people comment on other blogs. I only do it if the post offers up an intresting discussing.
I noticed someone posting ike this on my blog to, and I seen him on andhari's blog, and a few others. I don't know if it's the same comments, but it's just odd. Often very poetic and in no reference what so ever to the actual post he's commenting on! Annoying! Here I'm ll happy that someone has bothered to comment and then it's all nonsensical stuff about lpeace and love...Not at all about what I actually was pndering that day.
November 11, 2009 10:29 PM
Carina
Yea, I noticed that guy thru notification emails on other blogs. Well, he didn't read, because these emails were popping up every minute, so he just copied and pasted... well, to each their own :)
November 11, 2009 10:33 PM
Post a Kafkaesque comment!
